GPT-6 Astra by ChatGPT plan: every price, every allowance

"How much does GPT-6 Astra cost?" has a frustrating answer: it depends which surface you use it on. In the chat window it's called GPT-6 Pro and lives behind Pro tiers; in Work and Codex it reaches Plus; the API charges per token with no caps. Here's the full price-and-allowance table, cross-checked against OpenAI's pricing page and help documentation.

Where sources disagreed, we follow OpenAI's own materials: the chatgpt.com pricing page and the OpenAI help-page availability list (read September 16–17, 2026). Some third-party trackers describe "limited Astra access" on Plus — treat their wording as looser than OpenAI's, and re-check the help page before buying.

Three pricing gaps that trip people up

1. The $20 → $100 cliff is about the surface, not the model

Plus subscribers keep asking why they can't find Astra in the chat window. They can't: OpenAI's availability list puts GPT-6 Pro (the consumer name for Astra) on Pro tiers only. Plus gets Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex — genuinely useful if you automate work, useless if you just want a better chat. That's a 5x price step for the surface most people actually use.

2. Pro allowances are shared budgets, not two buckets

On Pro $100, the 50 weekly GPT-6 Pro messages are shared with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro — switching between them does not create more messages. On Pro $200, the 200/week GPT-6 Pro cap has a separate 170/day Sol Pro allowance, but the two together are capped at 200/day. Hitting the weekly GPT-6 Pro cap does not lock you out: ChatGPT automatically falls back to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium.

3. Nobody publishes the Pro $500 allowance

The $500 tier, added September 29, 2026, carries the highest limits plus Ultrafast variants in Work and Codex — but OpenAI has not published a GPT-6 Pro message allowance for it. If you're considering Pro 500 for Astra chat volume, ask OpenAI sales directly rather than assuming.

The allowance fine print

Subscription vs API: pick by workload

The API has no message caps — it charges per token: $10 per million input / $50 per million output for Astra, with cheaper siblings (GPT-6.1 Sol at $2/$10, cached input $0.10) for the work Astra isn't needed for. If your usage is automation, batch processing, or always-on agents, the math usually favors the API. If it's interactive knowledge work, a subscription's fixed allowance wins on predictability.

Full rate cards, cache pricing and the Ultrafast tier's 6x multiplier are on our API pricing page and Ultrafast breakdown. And if you're deciding whether Astra's premium is worth it at all, our Astra vs GPT-6.1 Sol comparison runs the cost-per-task math.

Frequently asked questions

Which ChatGPT plan do you need for GPT-6 Astra in the chat window?

Pro at $100/month or more. Plus ($20) includes Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex but not the regular chat window, per OpenAI's help-page availability list.

How many GPT-6 Astra messages do you get?

Pro $100: 50/week shared with Sol Pro. Pro $200: 200/week plus 170/day Sol Pro, combined cap 200/day, auto-fallback when exhausted. Business Premium: 50/week shared. Business Standard: 15/month (single source). Pro $500: not published.

Is GPT-6 Astra unlimited on Pro?

No — OpenAI explicitly says a Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of GPT-6 Pro. Pro raises ceilings; it doesn't remove them.

Is the API cheaper than a subscription?

For automation and heavy programmatic use, usually yes — $10/$50 per million tokens with no caps. For interactive daily use, a subscription's fixed allowance is easier to budget.
